Supporters of Village Learning & Achievement Center will travel to Austin on March 14, 2011, to increase awareness about the proposed significant and far-reaching budget cuts and cost containment measures regarding Texas Health & Human Services Texas Medicaid Waiver Programs, such as Home & Community-based Services (HCS).  Attendees will participate in Legislative Visits (materials and training provided), Legislative Advocacy Training, and a Rally and Press Conference at the Capitol.

We have seats for 56 people and we hope to fill the bus!

Who:

Village Learning & Achievement Center program participants, families, friends and supporters

What:

Travel to Austin via air conditioned motor coach to visit with legislators and attend the rally and press conference

When:

Monday, 3/14/11; depart @ 6:00 a.m. & return @ 7:30 p.m.

Where:

Depart from our offices in the World Publications Building located at 3946 Glade Valley Drive in Kingwood (behind Wal-Mart Marketplace and adjacent to Kingwood Park High School) to travel to the Capitol in Austin

Why:

If community-based services for individuals with disabilities in Texas are important to you, we strongly encourage you to educate yourself and others about the massive budget cuts being proposed as the 82nd Texas Legislature struggles with an estimated $26 billion dollar revenue shortfall.  HCS providers like Village Learning & Achievement Center need your support!

A wide range of intellectual and developmental issues will be addressed at the rally.

Among them are:

  • The importance of self-determination and a support system that makes it possible
  • State Budget
  • Respectful Language
  • Special Education
  • Health and Human Services Programs
  • State Schools
  • Housing
  • Transportation

The Texas Families Unite Rally is sponsored by Texas Parent to Parent (TXP2P) Advocacy Network (a TCDD grant project) and the Down Syndrome Association of Central Texas.

To reserve your seat on the bus, contact Denise Nichols at 281-358-6172, ext.159.  The cost for each parent, guardian or supporter is $40. Village Learning & Achievement Center program participants may join the trip at no charge, provided they are accompanied by their parent/guardian.  (Village Learning & Achievement Center will absorb the cost for Villagers desiring to take advantage of this opportunity to self-advocate.)  Payments need to be received no later than 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, 3/9/11, and should be dropped off with the receptionist at the Center located at 3819 Plum Valley Drive.

If you prefer to attend the rally without your Villager, arrangements have been made for the Center to be open at 5:45 a.m. on Monday, 3/14/11, for early drop-off for parents/guardians going to Austin for the day.  Your Villager will be served breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and supervised until you return (at no additional cost to you).  When you reserve your seat, Denise will provide you with additional details regarding the trip.
